What are the Contest Categories?

The contest categories are open for Mobile applications serving but not limited to the following fields:

  1. Community: Education, Health & Fitness, Transportation, Water, Energy, Weather, Tourism .. etc.
  2. Entertainment: Social Networks, Media, News, Sports, lifestyle .. etc.
  3. Business: Small and Medium enterprises, Large Business, Financial markets, Banks ... etc.
  4. Students : either in schools or universities
  5. Orange employee

What are the Contest Rules and Eligibility?

  1. The Mobile Application should be useful application which meets the needs, solve problems and challenges facing the Middle East Community and to be customized to the Middle East Users Style.
  2. The Mobile Application Should be developed only for the following:
    1. Android.
    2. Blackberry
    3. Java
    4. Symbian
    5. Windows
  3. Applications language is mandatory in Arabic (English is a plus).
  4. Participants could apply as individuals or teams or as a company (startup or established).
  5. For startups which are not established yet, founder should apply as an Entrepreneur.
  6. In case of a team submission, a team leader should be designated as a point of contact
  7. Participants should declare any winning or participation in past mobile applications competition in details.
  8. The participant age shouldn't be less than 16 years
  9. Participants must read and accept the Terms and Conditions prior to entry to the contest

Who Can Apply?

  1. Professional Developers and programmers.
  2. Engineers and Researchers.
  3. Startups & established Companies.
  4. Entrepreneurs (Planning to start-up a company or companies underdevelopment and not registered yet).
  5. Students (schools, Undergraduates and Postgraduates).

What are the Judging Criteria?

The winning applications should meet the following criteria:

  1. Meet the requirements for the contest phases and meet all deadlines.
  2. Solving real problems, challenges and meet specific needs for the Middle east mobile users
  3. Startups & established Companies.
  4. Meeting acceptance (Business & Technical) criteria of Orange Jordan and partners

What are the Awards?

The contest allows mobile app developers to win valuable prizes; total amount of prizes will exceed $50,000. This will encourage the winners to create applications with brilliant ideas, great features, and excellent design.

What is the Timeline for Participants?

  • Developers can start registration starting from 16 of May 2011 till 12th of June 2011.
  • We will start filtering the ideas of the applications and will notify the participants of top 50 ideas by email & SMS to submit their applications
  • The deadline for submitting the applications will be on 30 of June, 2011
  • These applications will be technically tested by technical team.
  • The short listed applications will be selected and to be notified by email and SMS to present their applications in front of our Jury in the final Presentation Event.
  • The top winners will be awarded during the Award ceremony which will be after med of July.

Why have we excluded Apple ?

Based on a study we launched that covered the MENA region, we found out the mobile dominant OS were Symbian, Windows, BlackBerry and Android

I am a student and I am interested in taking part in your competition, what are the conditions?

To participate in our Orange Apps Awards, you should be 16 years old or above.

Who will own the ownership and the proprietary rights of the Apps?

The ownership rights will be the property of the developers and the role of Orange will be limited on distribution.

What will happen with my application in case it ended among the winning ones, and what are going to be the next steps from Orange side?

We will support you in marketing your applications utilizing Orange's distribution channels, and you will have the opportunity to be Orange Partner and sharing revenues of selling your application through our distribution channels

Won't be there any additional revenue coming to the developer once a winning application gets commercialized?

Yes, you will achieve financial revenues by selling your applications through our distribution channels

I have an idea but won't be able to submit an executable file for that application within the stated timeframe; would it be possible to share the idea in any other form?

You can submit your idea within the stated time frame and working on developing your application, if your idea was selected you will be notified to submit your application.

Why Arabic was chosen as the only acceptable language for the interface of submitted applications?

One of the main objectives of this contest is to enhance the availability of Arabic content, which based on statistics forms only 1%

Will I be able to deal or work/ partner with other mobile operators or entities if my application got awarded by Orange?

Yes you can work with other mobile operator, but you cannot present or sell the same app to another telecom company, as we will have the exclusive rights of distribution your applications.

Is there a limitation on the number of ideas/ application I can submit during the allowed time of the contest?

No, you can submit many ideas as you want, but if your ideas were selected, you should be able to translate them into applications and submitting your applications within the timeline, otherwise you will be disqualified.

Is there any limitation on the number of members under the same development team?

No, but the team should make sure that the funds are appropriately distributed to each member of the team and each member of the team must agree upon the method of payment. In addition, a team leader should be designated as a point of contact. Once a team has registered, the team may not add, remove, or substitute members or change the composition of the team for the duration of the Contest. The eligibility of the Participant is tied to the team's eligibility; if one member of the team does not comply with the Terms and Conditions or is disqualified, the team as a whole will be disqualified.

I am obligated to submit my application programming code along with the executable file?

Yes, you need to submit the soft code for the software; this will allow us to do any modifications needed in the future and control the compiler for different platforms

Would it be possible to submit an application that might have a negative effect on Orange, e.g. lowering the voice/ SMS traffic for instance?

No, any program code, programming instruction or set of instructions intentionally constructed with the ability to damage, interfere with or otherwise adversely affect computer programs, data files or operations, handsets and other devices, or the network functionalities, including, without limitation, viruses, spyware and programs deliberately carrying out a useless, disruptive or destructive function not justified by the legitimate running of the Application, such as creating billable events (e.g. calls, SMS, network connection), changing settings or gathering/forwarding/manipulating/destroying information of or about an End User without their permission or knowledge is considered a violation of criminal and civil Laws.

If I have an idea, but do not know how to execute it, is there any "walk arounds"?

You can cooperate with another developer and participate as a team.

Is there any release/ version related constraints when it comes to developing for a specific platform?

We have no issue when it comes to testing (i.e. we can test under any available release), however, our recommendation is to develop under the latest releases to benefit from all available functionalities

What kind of benefits I might be getting out of choosing Orange (mobile operator) as opposed to a specialized mobile application company when considering the commercialization of my application?

When choosing Orange, you will connect to a new way of working with us that makes it easy for you to enhance and distribute your apps via the Orange Distribution channels, it is a fast and easy way to reach millions of Orange customers around the world. You can initially distribute your apps in Jordan with other countries being added later on to our distribution channels.

While testing the application, will it be tested under several handsets running the same platform?

Orange will use device families to ensure testing is done on those devices necessary to ensure testing coverage of all selected handsets.

Can I develop to tablets as well as mobile phones?

Yes you can.

Will I retain the copyrights of my application after winning?

You will keep the copyrights of your applications; and we will have only the exclusive rights of distribution your applications

Are web based apps and widgets considered under the contest?

No, only mobile apps can participate, widgets are not allowed.

Is English not considered as an acceptable language, especially if I am to think about worldwide roll out?

You can develop your application in Arabic and translated to English

Can I sell the application to outside/inside party?

No, once your application has awarded, you will be requested to sign relevant agreements to be entitled to receive the award, and once you sign the agreement, you cannot present or sell the same app to another telecom company, as we will have the exclusive rights of distribution your applications.

Can I participate in another award for the same application?

No, the application submitted on the website for the purpose of participating in this contest was and will not be submitted to other contest or any telecommunication company inside or outside Jordan.
